Listed below, you will find information about corpora with recordings in various Swiss German dialects. Each depositum has an accompanying PDF file containing a brief overview of the content as well as a list of audio recordings, which is linked to the PAZ ID. The PDF file is currently available only in German. We are happy to answer your questions via our contact form.

Description: Student Maria Nänny recorded audio cassettes featuring interviews with one informant each from Teufen, Bühler and Gais. These recordings are available in digital format.

Recordings of political and cultural events (Depositum Schwarzenbach) [PAZ:ar7010]

Description: Prof. Dr. Rudolf Schwarzenbach's collection of 131 audio carriers contains recordings of political debates and cultural events that he compiled for his publication "Öffentliche Reden in der deutschen Schweiz der Gegenwart. Einführung in eine Sammlung sprachwissenschaftlicher Tonaufnahmen und Beiträge zu ihrer Auswertung" (Public Speeches in Contemporary German-speaking Switzerland. Introduction to a Collection of Linguistic Audio Recordings and Contributions to their Evaluation) (1987). More than half of the recordings have been digitised.
Recordings of the Chur dialect (Depositum Buchenel) [PAZ:ar7056]

Description: The recordings of the Chur dialect were made by Françoise Buchenel as part of a seminar paper at the University of Zurich. Both recordings are available in digital format.
Depositum Rohrer [PAZ:ar7200]

Description: Dr. Carl Rohrer's collection consists of five audio tapes with recorded radio broadcasts and extensive transcriptions, which were analysed for the publication "Der Konjunktiv im gesprochenen Schweizer Hochdeutschen: Analyse von Radiogesprächen" (The subjunctive in spoken Swiss High German: Analysis of radio conversations) (1973). The audio tapes and transcriptions have not yet been digitised. This will be done at the earliest opportunity.
Depositum Schmid [PAZ:ar7090]

Period: 1998 - 2006
Description: Prof. Dr. Schmid's collection consists of four different projects:
(1) Recordings of children's speech in Hinteregg,
(2) Recordings for a study on jitter and shimmer in the voice,
(3) Recordings of Solothurn dialects, and
(4) Recordings in German and Italian as part of a study on labiodental consonants in Swiss German.
All 10 recordings have been digitised.
Dicziunari Rumantsch Grischun (DRG) [PAZ:ar7180]

Description: Four audio recordings contain recordings on the topics of tannery and the manufacture of so-called "Schwardächer" - a traditional way to build roof in Switzerland. All audio recordings have been digitised.
European and non-European languages (Depositum Surbeck) [PAZ:ar7230]

Description: Peter Surbeck's collection contains recordings of various dialects and a comparative text recorded in 26 European and non-European languages. The collection was deposited with the Phonogram Archives in 2014 and is available in digital form.

Fricktal dialects (Depositum Meng) [PAZ:ar7020]

Description: Dr. Heinrich Meng's collection consists mainly of recordings of Fricktal dialects. It additionally contains recordings of dialects from the canton of Aargau and recordings of the dialect spoken in New Glaris (Wisconsin, USA). All four audio tapes have been digitised.

Youth language corpus

Description: The corpus consists of approximately 120 hours of audio recordings, of which 54.5 hours have been transcribed in Word format. The data comes from the SNF project "Jugendsprache in der Deutschweiz" (Youth Language in German-speaking Switzerland) by Prof. Dr. Erika Werlen, Dr. Esther Galliker and Dr. Fabienne Tissot (ZHAW) and is also available in the BAS Repository.
Legal debate about land improvement (Depositum Graf) [PAZ:ar7050]

Description: The compact cassette contains a recording of a debate on a piece of legislation at the "Meliorationsamt Thurgau" (Land Improvement Department of the canton of Thurgau). The audio recording has been digitised.
Dialect of Diepoldsau (Depositum Thurnherr) [PAZ:ar7030]

Description: Berta Thurnherr and Maria Schmid recorded the Diepoldsau dialect on 46 audio tapes with the goal of documenting the unique dialect and history of the village. All audio recordings have been digitised.

Description: For his publication "Sprachkontakt und Mehrsprachigkeit in Bivio Graubünden. Linguistische Bestandesaufnahme in einer siebensprachigen Dorfgemeinschaft." (Language Contact and Multilingualism in Bivio Graubünden. Linguistic Inventory in a Seven-Language Village Community) (1984), Prof. Dr. Andres Max Kristol recorded 22 audio cassettes featuring the dialects of Bivio.

Description: The collection consists of 43 tapes containing programmes by Robert Stäger that were broadcast on Radio DRS. The digitisation of the audio tapes has been mostly completed.

Description: In 2006, Mike Bacher recorded 14 DAT cassettes featuring various narrators recounting legends from Niedwaldner. These have all been digitised.
PAZTeK (Phonogrammarchiv Zürich: Text-Korpus)

Description: The project includes retro-digitised versions of all text publications from the Phonogram Archives. The scope comprises approximately 33 hours of audio recordings with partly phonetic and partly orthographic transcriptions, which are aligned at sentence level.

South Walser dialect recordings (Depositum Waibel) [PAZ:ar7080]

Description: For his dissertation "Die volkstümliche Überlieferung in der Walserkolonie Macugaga" (Folk Traditions in the Walser Colony of Macugaga) (1985), Max Waibel recorded South Walser recordings in Gressoney, Formazza, Alagna, Issime, Rima, Rimella and Saley. These are stored in MP3 format on a CD-ROM, which have been digitised.

Description: Erich Jordan recorded the dialects of Simplon and Zwischenbergen on 14 DAT cassettes for his publication "Einheimische erzählen. Aus Volkstum und Überlieferung von Simpeln und Zwischenbergen" (Locals tell their stories. From the folklore and traditions of Simpeln and Zwischenbergen) (1985). All recordings have been digitised.
